Geoje POW camp was established in Gohyeon-ri, Sinhyeon-eup, Geoje-sin in November, 1950 during Korean war. The camp was made to hold communism POW. In its big facility, it once housed 173,000 POWs including 150,000 North Korean and 20,000 Chinese POWs. Among them were 300 women POWs, oo. At that time there were conflicts between prisoners of pro-communism and again communism. There were also frequent fights and murder accident. On May 7, 1592 the commender of the camp Francis Y. Dodd was kidnapped and released in 4 days. This accident got world's attention. On June 18, 1958, president Lee Seung Man released 27,389 prisoners against communism On July 27, 1953 the camp was closed according to cease fire agreement.
The facility is now conserved as Gyeongnam Cultural Asset No.99 (designated in December,1983). They established a park on the old camp site between Gohyeon High School and Gohyeon Middle School. Established with 17 Exhibition Halls and 14 camp-reproduction halls, the park collects and displays the pictures, various devices and clothes from that time. It also produces a movie of Korean war and POW camp. The park is a field of education to learn the tragedy of our history. Movie "Heuk Su Seon" by producer Bae Chang Ho was located here in June, 2001.
