Byeokgye Tourist Site

Byeokgye Tourist Site has an outstanding natural environment of Bonghwangdae, Ilbungsa, Euiryeong Art Village, Mt. Hanusan, Byeokgye Reservoir, Byeokgye Valley and a camping site. Therefore, Euiryeong-gun designated this area as a tourist site. Bonghwangdae is a huge cliff on the way to Mt. Hanusan and Byeokgye valley. It is called Bonghwangdae.
Going up the stairs of Bonghwangdae, you meet a natural cave, a narrow stone gate and another cave. The mineral water from this cave washes your thirsty throat. On the halfway of the cliff is situated Bonghwangru Pavilion, where rare flowers and green grass blossom in spring and the forest becomes thick. Bonghwangdae landscape is best in fall. The sunset of Bonghwangdae covered with red maples is a masterpiece. Ilbungsa is the headquarter of Ilbung Order of Korean Buddhism. This is the temple where they had the cremation ceremony of the first leading monk of Ilbung Order, Seogyeongbo. 80 pieces of Monk Ilbung's sariras are enshrined here.
Walking 200m from Ilbungsa leads to Chalbi Dawon used as a workshop and an exhibition hall as well as a resting space. Tourists can experience potters and taste traditional tea.
Euiryeong Art Village was made using a closed school. Totem poles greet visitors at the entrance. There are also exhibition halls for wooden crafts, poems, painting photos, farming tools and other daily necessities.
Going up 3 minutes from the Art village, you meet Byeokgye Reservoir to enjoy fishing. This reservoir was built in 1979 to irrigate the area of Gungryu-myeon and Yugok-myeon. Euiryeong-gun fostered Byeokgye Camping site equipped with bungalow, water slides, mini-swimming pools and other sports facilities at the upper stream. It also completed a folk village on the southwest of the reservoir, and accomodation facilities accross from the reservoir. Homestay is available in Byeokgye village.
Passing Byeokgye village, you meet Byeukgye Valley with outstanding rock formations. This valley is also called Chalbi Valley(meaning cold rain) as the water of the valley is as cold as winter rain. The valley attracts summer visitors with the waterfalls and ponds of clean, icy water.
