Upo Wetland ![]() The foundation of Upo dates back to 140 million years ago, when the Korean land was first formed. 70,000pyeong of its whole 510,000pyeong area is freshwater area, which conserves the primitive ecological system in the land of Yueo-myeon, Daehap-myeon, and Ibang-myeon, Changnyeong. Now Upo is divided into two with a dam. They built a dam to prevent from the flood, and developed much of Upo wetland into the field. Though it became smaller in size, Upo still shows a magnificent landscape with rare water plants growing in Summer and early Fall, and thousands of migratory birds(wild geese, waterfowls, swans) flying on the wetland in Winter. Though Upo Wetland is not deep(1m when dried), the water here is never rotten as it has the self filtering ability. Upo is called as a big womb of the ecological system as it houses 30 kinds of birds, 29 kinds of fish, 14 kinds of the boneless creatures, 37 kinds of aquatic animals, and 72 kinds of water plants. Among them thorn lotuses gains the most popularity. The thorn lotus is a rare plant having at most 10 habitats in Korea. Some leaves of the thorn lotus are 1m wide in its diameter. The leaves are green and have thorns on the leaves. The marvelous sight of lotus flowers can be observed in October. Upo Wetland is a thesaurus of nature offering foods and places to live to a variety of water plants, birds, fish, and aquatic insects; water plants including iris, water chestnuts, frog bits, birds including wild geese, waterfowls, swans; fish including pale chub, Crucian carp, Chinese paradise fish; insects including water mantis, Korean muljara. |
