Somaemuldo
Walking 15 minutes on the slope behind the village leads to Mangtaebong
Peak, on which there is a natural observatory looking down plenty islands
of Tongyeong and Geoje Haegeumgang.
The natural observatory what we call is a sheer precipice made of rock formations with all kinds of forms and figures. This is, for sure, the most gorgeous scenic view of the south sea, producing colorful rainbows of water sprays and white bubbles. The rocks of the island have been battered by the wind, rain and waves for a long time, and finally made thousands of rock formations. As if they were inscribed by God, those rock formations have various shapes including Yongbawi(Dragon Rock) looking flying, gently smiling Bucheo Bawi(Buddah Rock), precipitous Byeongpung Bawi(Screen Rock), Geobuk Bawi(Turtle Rock) with a stretched neck, and Chotdae Bawi(Candle Rock). There are some rock caves opening their mouths from between the rocks, among which Geulsseongi-gul(cave) is thrilling for ship to pass into the cave. Samyeodo Isalnd facing Somaemuldo looks like a beautiful stone on a basin. It is fun to watch the island from the ship. The island looks like consisting of 2 to 7 small islands according to the place you stand. Besides there are many other big rocks on the hillside such as Nammae Bawi(Brother-and-sister Rock) with a sad legend and a house-size rock on the western cliff. They say that typhoons and storm waves threw this rock up to the hill. Even nowadays when the island faces typhoon, the rocks under the sea rolls like a fleet of tanks pass with a big noise, which frightens the whole island. Maemuldo is 500m apart on the north of Somaemuldo. However, on the south the ceaseless blue sea stretches 80km up to Daemado in Japan. While the camellia trees make a thick forest in Somaemuldo, Deungdaedo is covered with grass which matches well with a white lighthouse. Deungdaedo is a small island 30m apart from Somaemuldo, so people walk on the pebble road between two islands in the low tide. The heavenly gifted scenic view is like a landscape painting well matched with white cliffs, all shapes of rock formations, beautiful blue color of waters, the dimly seen horizon, the grass with wild flowers, and the outstanding white lighthouse. |
