Pyochunsa(Gyeongnam Provincial Monument No.17) was built by Monk Wonhyo in 654(the 1st year of king Muyeol, the Silla Dynasty). He saw the five colored propitious cloud rising from the bamboo field and built a temple and named it as Jukrimsa. In 829 Indian Monk, Hwangmyeong Seonsa also saw the five-colored propitious cloud here, built a three-storied pagoda, and enshrined Buddha's Sariras, There were more distinguished monks who lectured and accomplished their Buddhist merits here including Monk Bou Guksa in 889, Ilyeon Guksa in 1289. Pyochungsa is enshrining three great monks; Seosan, Samyeong, and Giheo.
Pyochungsa houses a lot of cultural assets including Natural Treasure, Treasure and Important Folklore Material. Cheongdoham Eeun Hyangwon(National Treasure No. 75), housed in Samyeong Daesa Remains Exhibition, is Korea's oldest existing bronze censor. The other treasures include three-storied pagoda(Treasure No.467), Samyeong Daesa Clothes(Folklore Material No. 19), stone lantern(Gyeongnam Tangible Cultural Asset No. 14), and Pyochung Seowon(Gyeongnam Tangible Cultural Asset No. 52).

Mt. Jaeyaksan, embracing Pyrchungsa, was used as the training camp for Hwarang in the Silla Dynasty. During Imjinwaeran monk Samyeong Daesa trained the troops of monks to protect the nation. From the Gory? Dynasty to the Joseon Dynasty Gory? Dynasty to the Joseon Dynasty plenty of Confucian scholars came here and accomplished their scholastic achievement on this mountain. Jaeyaksan has eight major peaks; Pilbong, Sajabong(1,189m), Sumibong, Goambong and Hyangnobong. The village 'Gucheon-ri' is named after the water from the 9 valleys of the mountains. On the 700m~800m high slope Mt. Jaeyaksan lie spacious plateaus named as Sajapyeong(2.5 million pyeong) and Arrow-root Field(1.5 million pyeong), giving the best view of leads in fall.
Different from other temples, Pyocheungsa makes Buddhism and Confucianism coexist in a fence. Seowon os typically a Confucian academy, but Pyochung Seowon is situated in Pyochungsa Temple and is administered by the monks of Pyochungsa.
